About the Programme

The Ground Game
Most Gyms Can't Teach.

Until Sparing started this programme, there was no serious wrestling or grappling training available in Kerala. If you've been looking for it, you don't have to look anymore.

Our wrestling programme has roots in freestyle wrestling — full-body attacks, leg shots allowed — plus influence from SAMBO and catch wrestling. Our grappling programme draws from BJJ, SAMBO, and submission wrestling. Students attending 3+ days per week get dedicated training in all three.

Competition-Proven Coaching
Our wrestlers competed at the 2025–26 Junior Championship in Kannur and bagged 2 Gold and 4 Silver medals. We train students who compete and win.
Wrestling + Grappling Combined
Takedowns and standing work connect directly to ground positions and submissions. They're not separate — they're the same fight.
Complete MMA Pathway
Wrestling and grappling are the two phases of MMA most Kochi gyms can't provide. Sparing has both, in-house, with dedicated coaching.

What You'll Learn

The complete takedown-to-submission pathway, built progressively from your first session.

Wrestling Stance & Motion
How to move efficiently on your feet — staying in position to attack, defend, and re-engage. The start of everything.

Single & Double Leg Takedowns
The two most important takedowns in wrestling and MMA. Setup, penetration step, finish — drilled until they're automatic.

Takedown Defence
Sprawl, whizzer, front headlock, and frames. Stopping takedowns is as important as hitting them.

Clinch & Body Lock
Underhooks, overhooks, and body lock control — the connection between standing wrestling and the ground.

Guard & Ground Positions
Guard, side control, mount, and back — the four positions every grappler needs to control and escape.

Submissions
Arm bars, chokes, kimuras, heel hooks, and ankle locks — applied from every position. SAMBO leg locks integrated.

Escapes & Reversals
Getting out of bad positions is as valuable as getting into good ones. Both sides of every position are trained.

Positional Sparring
Technical rolling from specific starting points — the fastest path from drilling to live grappling competence.

For First-Timers

New to Wrestling
& Grappling?

Whether you've watched Dangal and want to know what the sport actually is, or you're an MMA student needing a ground game — here's how the first couple of months work.

1
Week 1–2
Stance, Motion, Break-Falls
Wrestling stance, basic movement, break-falls. You learn how to move on the ground without using strength. Low intensity — foundation work, not fitness work.
2
Week 3–6
First Takedowns & Positions
Single leg, double leg, and sprawl. Learn guard, side control, and mount. Begin positional drilling with a partner. Introduction to basic submissions from each position.
3
Month 2+
Sparring & Integration
Light positional sparring from specific starting points, closely supervised. Full free rolling for students who are ready. Takedowns start connecting into dominant positions.

What to Bring

No Gear Needed
For Your First Class.

Grappling is usually trained no-gi at Sparing, so you don't need a BJJ gi to start. No prior experience needed.

What to bring
  • Shorts or track pants, t-shirt or rash guard
  • Water bottle and small towel
  • Grappling is no-gi — no BJJ gi required
  • Ear guards for wrestling (available to borrow)
Safe by Design

Grappling has a lower injury rate than striking sports and contact team sports. Submissions are trained with a clear tap system — the moment you tap, your partner releases immediately. Sparing doesn't tolerate ego-driven training.

Mobin Babu leads the wrestling programme at Sparing Lifestyle, focused on wrestling technique, takedown defence, and ground control. He trains athletes from juniors to competitive fighters, and the 2025 championship medal tally speaks directly to the quality of his coaching.

Sreeraj M brings deep expertise in grappling and ground-game strategy — conditioning athletes for competition-level performance. Head Coach Kiran V S oversees all programmes and builds the integration between wrestling, SAMBO, and the striking disciplines.

Is this BJJ?+
Not exactly, but close. Sparing grappling draws from BJJ, SAMBO, and catch wrestling. If you want pure, traditional BJJ with belt promotions under a named lineage, the nearest dedicated academies are in Bangalore and Mumbai. What we offer is serious, technical grappling with positions, submissions, and sparring that translates to BJJ, MMA, and self-defence equally.
Is grappling dangerous?+
Grappling has a lower injury rate than striking sports and contact team sports. Submissions are trained with a clear tap system — the moment you tap, your partner releases immediately. Injuries happen when beginners refuse to tap; that's a culture problem, not a sport problem, and Sparing doesn't tolerate it.
Do I need a gi?+
No. Sparing grappling is trained primarily no-gi — shorts and rash guard. A SAMBO kurtka is useful if you layer in SAMBO training. No traditional BJJ gi required.
Is this the same as Olympic wrestling?+
Our wrestling has roots in freestyle wrestling — full-body attacks, leg shots allowed — plus influence from SAMBO and catch wrestling. We focus on techniques that work across rule sets and in MMA contexts, not just Olympic-specific rule compliance.
Can I train grappling without doing MMA or striking?+
Yes. Plenty of Sparing students focus purely on grappling and never train striking. The disciplines cross-recommend but don't require each other.
Can women train wrestling and grappling?+
Yes. Mixed classes include women students. Grappling is particularly valuable as women's self-defence because it works regardless of size and strength differences — technique is everything.
How much does wrestling/grappling training cost?+

Do Sparing wrestlers compete?+
Yes. Our wrestlers competed at the 2025–26 Junior Championship in Kannur, Srikandapuram and won 2 Gold and 4 Silver medals. We actively prepare students for competition if they want that pathway.
