Boxing training at Sparing Lifestyle YMCA Kochi Est. 2019 — Kochi

About the Programme

Boxing done properly.
Not just cardio.

If you are searching for boxing classes in Kochi, you have two honest questions: is the coaching real, and will the gym actually fit a beginner? At Sparing Lifestyle, we answer both the same way we have since 2019 — by training fighters, not followers.

Sparing is a dedicated combat sports gym with branches in Ernakulam — YMCA (Shenoys), Edachira (Kakkanad), and our Multi-Gym at YMCA Annex. Boxing sits at the core of what we do, alongside kickboxing, MMA, SAMBO, wrestling and grappling.

Whether you have never thrown a jab or you are preparing for your first amateur bout, you train in the same room, under the same coaches, with the same standards.

Two Branches — One Standard
Same curriculum, same drills, same coaches across YMCA and Edachira. Move between branches without losing continuity.
Coaches Who Compete
Led by Kiran V S, Head Coach with years of competitive experience across boxing, kickboxing and MMA.
Open Batches — All Levels
Every boxing batch is open to every level. Coaches scale drills up and down in real time — a first-week and a six-month student share the same session.

The Programme

What You'll Learn

A typical 60–90 minute session covers all fundamentals — built progressively from your first class to sparring-ready.

01
Stance & Footwork
Orthodox and southpaw stance, pivot, step-slide, and cutting angles — the foundation everything else is built on.
02
Fundamental Punches
Jab, cross, hook, uppercut and their variations. Clean technique before power, always.
03
Combinations
Building 2, 3 and 4-punch combos with head and body targets. Rhythm, timing and flow under pressure.
04
Defence
Slip, roll, parry, block, and creating exit angles. Protecting yourself is half the sport.
05
Pad & Bag Work
Heavy bags, focus mitts, and double-end bags to build power, accuracy, and real conditioning.
06
Sparring
Controlled, supervised, starting light. Only when your defence is ready — never before.
07
Conditioning
Strength and endurance work tailored to boxing demands — not generic gym fitness.
08
Warm-up & Mobility
Shoulder, hip, and ankle prep specific to boxing movement. Injury prevention from day one.

For First-Timers

New to Boxing?
Start Here.

Most people who walk into Sparing have never trained a combat sport before. That is the norm, not the exception.

Here is what actually happens in your first month.

1
Week 1–2
Foundations
Stance, guard, basic footwork, and the jab. Low-intensity, high-repetition. No sparring, no heavy bag pounding — you are building the movement pattern before loading force on it.
2
Week 3–4
Combinations
Add the cross, hook, and uppercut. Begin light pad work with coaches. Introduce simple defence — parry and slip. Clean 1-2-3 combinations by end of month.
3
Month 2+
Progression
Heavier pad work, controlled bag rounds, defensive drills, and — if you want it — an introduction to light technical sparring under direct coach supervision.

Kiran V S leads the boxing and combat sports programme at Sparing Lifestyle. With years of competitive experience across boxing, kickboxing, and MMA, Kiran brings a no-shortcut coaching philosophy that has shaped fighters across Ernakulam and Kakkanad.

The rest of the coaching team includes senior coaches with direct experience across boxing, kickboxing, SAMBO, wrestling and grappling. You are not being taught boxing by a personal trainer who took a weekend course — you are being taught by people who spar weekly.

"Boxing is simple, not easy. My job is to get you the simple parts right so the hard parts start to feel natural. Every student moves at their own pace — what matters is that they move forward."

Why Box

What Boxing Will Actually Do For You

The honest short version — no gym marketing fluff.

🫁
Cardiovascular Conditioning
Stamina that maps to real-world demands — not just treadmill fitness. A boxing session will test and build endurance unlike anything else.
💪
Full-Body Strength
Punching correctly engages legs, hips, core, and shoulders — not just arms. Boxing is a whole-body movement sport.
Reaction Speed
Hand-eye coordination and reaction time developed faster than most sports. Critical for every aspect of life, not just fighting.
🛡️
Real Self-Defence
Genuine skill that does not rely on memorising forms. Practical, pressure-tested under supervision.
🧠
Mental Discipline
Boxing is the cleanest feedback loop in sport. You know immediately when you are wrong — and that builds a sharpness that carries over everywhere.
😤
Stress Release
Hitting pads for an hour after work does something no meditation app can replicate. One of boxing's least discussed but most felt benefits.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Honest answers to the questions most first-timers ask before joining.

Is boxing good for complete beginners? +
Yes. The majority of students who join Sparing have never trained a combat sport before. Our classes are structured to take a beginner from zero to confident fundamentals in roughly 8–12 weeks, depending on frequency.
How long does it take to learn boxing? +
You can hold a basic stance, throw clean combinations, and defend at a beginner level within 2–3 months of consistent training (3 days a week). Becoming genuinely competent — comfortable sparring and reading opponents — takes 12–18 months. There is no shortcut, but there is a clear path.
Do I need to be fit before joining? +
No. The class is the fitness programme. If you can walk briskly for 20 minutes without stopping, you can start. Conditioning is built progressively — nobody is asked to do something their body is not ready for.
Can women join the boxing classes? +
Yes. Our mixed batches include many regular women students across both branches. If you would prefer to speak to a current student before joining, we are happy to connect you.
What is the difference between boxing and kickboxing? +
Boxing uses only the hands — jab, cross, hook, uppercut — and focuses heavily on head movement and footwork. Kickboxing adds kicks, knees, and in some systems clinch work. Both are offered at Sparing.
Can I spar from day one? +
No — and any gym that says yes is a gym to avoid. Sparring starts only after you have the defensive fundamentals to protect yourself, typically after 6–8 weeks of consistent training. Even then, it is light, technical, and closely supervised.
How much do boxing classes cost? +
Fees are shared on enquiry because packages vary by branch, frequency (3-day or 6-day), and whether you are combining boxing with other combat sports. Call or WhatsApp us for the current fee structure.
Can kids learn boxing? +
A dedicated kids programme is in development. In the meantime, contact us to discuss age-appropriate options — we have experience coaching junior athletes.
